The City of 谷堡

谷堡, the county seat of 桃县, is referred to as the Peach Capital of Georgia because of the number of peaches grown here. 谷堡 is also the birthplace of Blue Bird School buses which have been manufactured here for nearly 90 years. It also boasts a thriving pecan industry and is home to the National Camellia Society and 谷堡 State University.

谷堡 was settled by James Abingdon Everett who founded the city as an Indian trading post. 谷堡 was incorporated March 3, 1856. Interestingly, the origin of the county seat's name is unclear. One story claims Everett named the city "Fox Valley," but that his writing was misread by officials at the United States Post Office in Washington, D.C.,被称为“谷堡”." Another story claims Everett named the town after his friend Arthur Fort, a Revolutionary War hero from nearby 米利奇维尔. In any case, it seems that there was never a military fort in the new county.

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, The City of 谷堡 had a population of 8,643 persons in 2016. 这个城市面积5.3英亩. It is governed by a mayor and city council and served by highly-regarded fire and police departments.
